Nailing a job interview can be a stressful, nerve-wracking experience for someone looking to land the perfect job. You want to make the right impression to prove to those conducting the interview that you’re worthy of the job. So, how do you know which questions to ask when conducting a job interview? Here are a few example questions to keep in mind. Test Your Candidate’s Knowledge About Their Current Position and The Position They’re Interviewing For You want to make sure the person you’re interviewing understands what role they’re preparing to take with your company and can demonstrate their value to their former employer. You’ll want to know if the candidate was successful at their old job and can carry over those successes to a new position. Ask about the candidate’s job history and how they progressed to where they are now. You should also ask about how they adapted as their job changed with the company and how they stood out from fellow co-workers. They should also be able to answer questions about what their current employer does for customers and how their role helped the business succeed. This can lead to questions about your business and how the prospective employee can benefit your company. How Does Your Prospective Employee Fit Into Your Company Culture? You’re going to want to know how well your candidate would fit in with your company and fellow employees. That means asking questions about how long it takes the interviewee to complete a task, how well does he or she respond to criticism, what sort of collaborative projects have they worked on at their current position, how much direction do they need to get the job done, and to give an example of a time when he or she had to deal with a crisis or urgent situation on the job. What you’re looking for here is to find out if the candidate will work well with the rest of the team and can be relied on in a pinch to help others and manage difficult situations. How Eager is the Candidate for the Job? What you want to find most of all is a candidate who truly wants to be a part of your team and is chomping at the bit to get to work for you. Many candidates will say the right things about your company and the opportunity, but how do you know if they’re actually excited to be a part of your team? Try to find out which candidate is the most excited and appreciative of the opportunity by asking why they want to work for you, how much they know about the company, how does this opportunity play a role in meeting future career goals, and what stands out the most about the job and the company. When creating your resume, one of the most important things to remember is the old adage, “substance over flash.” Here, that means that the content of your resume is vastly more important than the design template you choose. It’s the content of that resume that really sticks with employers, not the design. Below, we’ve outlined a few key areas of the resume and how you can make easy tweaks to really set yourself apart from your competition, even if you don’t have years worth of employment to list. Showcase Your Qualifications & Accomplishments As they pertain to the job, that is. You may have a lengthy job history that spans different industries or are looking to find your first job and may not have any job experience to show. Whatever the case, you should explore your job history, volunteer work, or extracurricular activities and speak about the areas that apply to the job you want. This also includes any honors, awards, or distinctions that you have received. Remember, you shouldn’t include everything in your history because your resume needs to fit onto one page. Format, Format, Format! A good resume will be sectioned into different categories that keep all of your information organized and ready to read. We recommend having sections for education, accomplishments, skills, work experience, and contact information. Now, while we did say to think about substance over flash, we also advise against going with a very basic resume template. These are a good place to start, but do remember to reformat and add a bit of your personality to it. A resume is supposed to show who you are, after all. Think about professional fonts and language, but remember that you can still highlight who you are in the design.
